TGIF
Yay, it's Friday! I haven't really had anything new on my mind that I've felt like sharing this week, so I haven't been blogging much. But there are a number of thoughts formulating within that may bubble to the surface any day now. I don't know why, but this year seems to be zooming by really fast. Hard to believe that January is almost over.
About the only recent revelation to share is that yesterday I noticed that I had put on my belt one notch smaller!! Those daily rides on my NordicTrack must be doing something good....

Zen
Things are more peaceful at the office now...
Got a really nice surprise at work today as we found out that we are getting a bonus of 8 days worth of pay! Hmm, that'll take care of a few nice things like toys for Matthew, toys for me, plane tickets to visit J..... Ahhh, just think of the possibilities.....

Random Stuff
Random photos... Random werdz
SUV Wash
Got both of my rebates (yesterday and today) from purchasing my
Treo 600 on
Amazon from Sprint, so I'm $300 richer again! Oh yeah, I still need to write up that review that I promised...
Jamba Fix
Matthew's reading has really gotten better, and so quickly! He reads with very little help now and already knows some pretty big words! It's amazing because I haven't really done any special with him, other than read to him regularly. I'm still wondering if it would even be worth it to get
Hooked on Phonics now.
Salads Salads
Four more weeks of basketball for Matthew, and he starts into baseball next week already! And he's about halfway through his swimming lessons at the Y right now. Sheesh. Can you say that he's into his athletics?
Fuji Sighting
Been really busy at work this year already, and it looks like it's going to be like this for some time now. But I think I have a handle on how I'm going to make things flow smoother, if I just buckle down and work smarter and get more organized. Yeah, I'm known for being pretty organized at work, but recently I've been a bit overcome by too much stuff going on simultaneously. I'm gonna drive everyone crazy by being super-organized, if I can get this plan in my head down on paper (on the computer) and execute it well. Hehe.
Oh, and I had my yearly review last week, so I'm hoping that it will translate into a decent raise this year. Last year it was pretty weak. With all this work and stress, I think it's about time for another vacation, don't you think? Hahaha!
Teleconference
Got a busy weekend coming up, with Matthew's games, Matthew's basketball team coming over to our place, and the Super Bowl party at Franko's! Lots of cleaning up this week before the thundering horde comes over.
Well, that's it for my rambling. I gotta continue my workout. It's been almost 2 weeks straight of riding my NordicTrak daily and doing stomach crunches. I'm even amazing myself.

CHIPS!!
Whoa,
THIS site (taquitos.net) has all of my favorite snacks in one place! This is one of my all time weaknesses, CHIPS! Some of my favorites are Terra chips, those new Lays guacamole flavored chips, Tim's Cascade style chips, Shrimp chips, and any kind of Japanese rice crackers (too many to specify).
Most of the reviews on this site are pretty good (I didn't read them all, though). But when I came across
this one, I started having second thoughts about this site. These "mushrooms" are used for cooking, and the guy tried eating them out of the bag! Duh.
What are your favorite kinds of chips/snacks?

Brand New Day
I'm the rhythm in your tune
I'm the sun and you're the moon
I'm a bat and you're the cave
You're the beach and I'm the wave
I’m the plow and you’re the land
You're the glove and I'm the hand
I'm the train and you're the station
I'm a flagpole to your nation - yeah
Stand up all you lovers in the world
Stand up and be counted every boy and every girl
Stand up all you lovers in the world
Starting up a brand new day
I'm the present to your future
You're the wound and I’m the suture
You're the magnet to my pole
I'm the devil in your soul
You're the pupil I'm the teacher
You're the church and I'm the preacher
You're the flower I'm the rain
You're the tunnel I'm the train
Stand up all you lovers in the world
Stand up and be counted every boy and every girl
Stand up all you lovers in the world
Starting up a brand new day
You're the crop to my rotation
You're the sum of my equation
I'm the answer to your question
If you follow my suggestion
We can turn this ship around
We'll go up instead of down
You're the pan and I'm the handle
You're the flame and I'm the candle
Stand up all you lovers in the world
Stand up and be counted every boy and every girl
Stand up all you lovers in the world
We're starting up a brand new day

How was your day?
We had a quiet day today with no appointments, and it was nice to not have to be anywhere for a change. So, after getting a chance to sleep in and making a late breakfast for Matthew and I, we headed out to my fave store,
Target.
Matthew brought along the money that he's been getting as his allowance and he was excited to finally get a chance to buy something. He wanted to buy a lot of things but found out just how expensive things are! So he decided on buying MORE Yu-Gi-Oh cards. But when we went up to the register, he got scared and didn't want to pay the cashier or even hand her his cards! Sigh. He did that total shut-down again and I had to help him take money out of his wallet and pay her. He does that when he's under pressure and doesn't know what to do. It's very frustrating because I don't know how to get him to do things when he shuts down. We talked about it afterwards so hopefully next time it will go better.
Geek Squad?
Next stop was over to
Best Buy to pick up my tax software to do last year's taxes. Oy, it's that time again.
Best Buy
After lunch we did a few things around the house, and I got both lawns mowed while Matthew played computer games in the house (it was kinda cold and gloomy outside), but when I did some yard work in the back yard, Matthew came out to play basketball by himself. So cute to hear him announce play-by-play by himself, as he was shooting the ball ("...and the Sonics have the ball... Ohhh, he misses the shot and the Lakers get the rebound!")
Vietnamese chicken salad rolls and Blazing Chicken Noodles
For dinner, we tried the new
Pei-Wei restaurant that just opened up in the neighborhood. It's an offshoot from PF Chang's and the quality was pretty good although the taste was only so-so. The place is pretty upscale looking for a Chinese fast food restaurant, but i'll bet they make good money because of that look and feel. I'm kinda spoiled by many good "authentic" Chinese restaurants in the area, but since the quality of the food was good, I'm sure they will do well. I'm just not going to be making many visits there.
Mint Chocolate Chip... Matthew's favorite!
I've been doing pretty good with my exercising over the last week and a half, so I treated myself and Matthew to some ice cream at
Baskin-Robbins to end the evening!

Whoa, we have no plans for this Saturday! I thought that Matthew had a birthday party to go to, but it turns out that it's on Sunday. That's OK, because next weekend is going to be super busy again so that will give us a chance to catch up on a lot of things around the house. Wish us luck that we can make it very productive.

New Year's Feast
In celebration of the New Lunar year, I was trying to figure out something that Matthew and I could do tonight. I hadn't even given it any thought until I was chatting with
da Mouji boy and he planted the idea of going out to get some fresh crab tonight. So after doing some checking around for places to get live crab, I decided on going over to
Captain Kidd's down at the shoreline and pick up one after picking up Matthew from school.
Captain Kidd's at night
Checking out the selection of fresh crabs
Just missed the sunset
The fish man picked out a nice big dungenous crab, that was still very lively and wrapped it up for us to take home. We also stopped at
Giuliano's Delicatesson and Bakery for a fresh sourdough baguette, cole slaw, and a huge garlic dill pickle!!
Matthew kept asking all the way home "is it dead yet?" So when I opened it up it was still moving a little bit.... and when I put it in the hot steamer, the dang thing almost jumped out of the pot! It took me several tries to get the lid on the pot, and when I did, I had to hold it down while it was going "clackety-clack" trying to get out!!! So, needless to say, it was VERY FRESH! As long as I don't think about it too much, it's not so sad to think that I just murdered a live creature in scalding hot water and tasty spices!
Ready to eat!
Ohh, lemme tell ya it was awesome! Nothing like fresh steamed crab, with drawn butter, and Matthew was really loving the crab (his favorite) and especially the huge sour pickle! We made a big mess and the house smells like a fish market, but dang, was it good! Eh, so there's goes the diet again.
Yummy!
Of course, I couldn't disappoint him on this New Year's day, so Matthew found a little red envelope on his pillow after getting ready for bed! But then, he was asking if the envelope should have been a little bit bigger! :)
Got my RED envelope!

Single Parenting is Insane
I've started reading one of the books I picked up at
Borders the other day, and the first one is
The Single Dad's Survival Guide, How to Succeed as a One-Man Parenting Team. So far, it's easy to read and reaffirms all of the difficulties I've had to go through, trying to be a single Dad. While it was written by a man who became single through divorce, as opposed to widowed like me, he does have a lot of advice that I can use too.
There's no real hint about the theme of the book from the outside, but a big part of the book is centered around believing in God and relying on the bible to help get through this tough task. That was a pleasant surprise as I have relied on God a lot to get me through the difficult times. This quote from the book touched me:
"In the bible we read the amazing truth that God's strength is made perfect in our weakness. Being alone, being hurt, being at fault, being the vicitim of someone else's carelessness-- all of these cause sorrow and pain. However, it's not the end of the world. Though you have good reason to feel emotionally battered, you have children, extended family, friends, and a God who are still with you. Draw strength and wisdom from those who remain on your side."
Chapter 2 is entitled "Single Parenting Is Insane" and man-O-man is he right! The author goes on to say
"A single dad has to lead, provide, instruct, and discipline. But he must also nurture and encourage with the gentle grace that seems to be the gift God has given to women." Yeah, what a tough job I have to cover all the bases, but he goes into a very good description of the areas that I need to be aware of to try and be both the dad and the mom.
I'll let you know how the rest of this book goes. So far, so good.

Here's another reason to dislike Microsoft (

retracted a bit from their earlier stance. This is a case where a big corporation is so paranoid about their gross amounts of wealth, that they'll go to any length to protect it.

Waffles, Gel, Fish, Leather and Bread
(Warning, this is a really, REALLY long entry!)
Hmm, that kinda sounds like maybe it should be a
Simon and Garfunkel song, but that's briefly what our wonderfully busy Saturday was like. It was another one of those days when a whole bunch of "fun" activities converged on one day, but fortunately they all seemed to fit together well.
Got up fairly early on Saturday morning, to pick up around the house before the housekeeper came over at 8:30 and since I hadn't gone shopping for a while, we had to go out for breakfast. We went past a few different places that were very crowded already, and ended up at
Denny's, which made Matthew happy. I had the Belgian
waffles and Matthew had the junior grand slam.
Matthew getting his new "do"
Soon afterwards it was time for Matthew's haircut appointment and his hair stylist was waiting for us. I thought perhaps Matthew would try to talk to her this time, but for some reason, still persists in avoiding any verbal communications with her. I don't know what it is that he has stuck in his craw about her. But he was looking really stylish with his new "do" and
gel in his hair.
Matthew having fun with his friends from school
Immediately after Matthew's hair appointment, I took him to his new friend Nicky's house (not to be confused with his "old" friend Nicky). I've been trying harder to get Matthew's social life going so that "I" can have more of a social life, so I asked Nicky's parents to take Matthew for the afternoon and they gladly accepted. And another of Matthew's classmates did the same thing, so it was even more fun for Matthew.
Lots of Yummy food!
Next I headed over to the Loft restaurant for our "
Fish-head" luncheon. Back in the day, I used to hang out with this bunch of high school/college friends and it had been several years since I had seen most of those people, other than an occasional run-in at Target or at someone's wedding/funeral. It was a total blast catching up with everyone, talking about our kids, gossiping about other friends, laughing, reminiscing about old times and just carrying on like old friends. We're hoping to do it again sometime this summer. Big thanks to Sue for organizing the get-together! Lots of pictures
HERE!
OK, so you probably wonder what the heck a "Fish-head" is, right? Briefly, as I recall, it was based on a group that went out to various restaurants together called the "Fish" club. Some of us were trying that same idea for a while, going to different places to eat and we jokingly did a take-off on the derogatory slang term "Fish-head" for a bunch of Asians hanging out together. We didn't really do the dinner thing for a long time, but continued to hang out and do things together, with various changes in the group, but the name still stuck.
Run guys, Run!
OK, back to the Saturday recap. After lunch I went to pick up Matthew at his friends house and headed over to his basketball team practice. The practice was a little bit late because of a cheerleader competition in the gym where they play, but the boys had a pretty good practice (which showed on Sunday!) dribbling and fighting over the
leather.
Matthew and Kory saying Hi! to little Derek
Immediately after practice we made our way over to
Pat and Oscar's restaurant (known for their wonderful and abundant
breadsticks) to meet up with our church fellowship group. Unfortunately we missed out on the early bible study session, but caught up on everyone at the restaurant. I'll tell you a bit about this year's topic on a future rambling.
Not-so-busy Sunday
Hanging with da boys after the game
Had to get up early on Sunday for an early basketball game for Matthew and really enjoyed the way his team played today. A big difference from last week's game, which was their first of the new season, and the one that Matthew missed playing in. Everyone was really happy that most of the kids played very well, and of course I was obviously proud of the way that Matthew handled the ball as the point guard when he was in the game.
These are from a couple of weeks ago, but we cleaned up a ton of leaves again
The rest of the day was just spent leisurely running errands around town and cleaning up around the house (with help from Matthew!) and then an afternoon nap for the two of us.
Monday Off
Since today was MLK day at Matthew's school, I had to take a vacation day to stay with Matthew at home. But it was good because we got to sleep in, Matthew's friend came over to play for a couple of hours while I got a chance to do things at home (pay bills, organize paperwork, put things away, etc.) while the boys were occupied.
After lunch I took Matthew to the last of his visits at the therapist. I've been taking Matthew to a family psychologist as a form of a "mental check-up" to see how he's doing in his life without a mom. The Dr. says that she thinks he is doing very well and probably doesn't need to make any more visits unless I think there are some issues that need to be resolved. She mostly used "play therapy" to analyze and help him out. Mostly what I got out of it was an awareness of the things that I need to do to help him develop into a well-rounded, mentally healthy person, as well as things that I need to work on for myself. Now I'm not saying that he doesn't need any help, since he does have some things that need work, but they aren't anything that I shouldn't be able to handle on my own.
So, after that visit, we went to
Borders books and I bought a few books on parenting and Child Psychology, as well as the math book that Matthew wanted (he LIKES math!). I'll give you my reviews on these books after I read them!
Time for a boba break!
Whew, wasn't that a LOOOONG entry?

Challenge
J challenged me yesterday to either lose 10 pounds or exercise every day (including eating better) until Valentine's day, and we would do it "together" (well, at the same time, since we are so far apart). 10 pounds in a month would be pretty tough, so I went for the exercising every day. But maybe there still be some weight benefits from all that exercise, so I'm going to try and post my weight here regularly again like I tried just before the holidays. That was poor timing on my part because as soon as the holidays rolled around, I totally didn't try to do any exercise. OK, so here's where I am tonight:

And this was my response....

Hi there,
Thanks for writing all the way from Hawaii! Yes, I
definitely agree that kids are great. We've been
through some tough times since my son lost his mom to
cancer, but I do believe that I am lucky that God
blessed me with a wonderful little boy who is smart,
athletic, easy-going and full of life!
We were in Hawaii last summer on vacation for my son's
first visit. We hit a lot of the touristy spots,
visited some friends, and also took advantage of the
local spots too like Shiro's for ramen, Waiola for
shave ice, Leonards for malasadas, etc. You get the
idea that I like Hawaii food, eh? Hahaha.
Well, it does seem that we do have a number of things
in common from our profiles but the distance is a big
differencce. I actually tried to make a relationship
work with someone from Massachusetts, but it was just
too difficult. Although I figure there's nothing
wrong with making new friends, right?
Hope that everything is going well over there too!
Aloha,
Brian
My life hasn't been the same since! (I mean that in a good way! no, really!) Hahaha....

A New Year, New Attitude
I'm definitely not one for making New Year's resolutions. And this year has gotten off to a rather slow start since first of all we were out of the country on New Year's Day (although that was a good thing), and trying to recover from the vacation, AND Matthew getting the chicken pox threw me back a step or two.
But it's time to set off on a new course. Yeah, the impetus for this "change" has been due to J. A lot of it has been from hours and hours of deep conversations, some by her example and some from straight out whacking me upside da head! But of course the actual changes will have to be made by me. She just woke me up to make me realize that I need to make some adjustments. No, actually more than just adjustments, these are fundamental changes. No matter what happens between us in the future, at least I will be thankful to her that she has done a lot of things to make me a better person.
I'm mainly talking about changes to my attitude towards life. There was a point in my life more than 10 years ago, that I felt like I was in a serious rut. I made a concerted effort at that time to change my attitude, be more positive and be happy with what I had. Before I knew it, I was feeling better, the world around me was better, my life changed dramatically as really good things happened to me. I met Grace, got married, had a kid and life was very good. Of course by a stroke of bad luck, things didn't turn out as well as I had hoped.
But I don't like to look backwards, especially on something that was out of my control, except to use my experiences to learn and grow. Although, these last three years or so, I can see that my outlook on life has not been anywhere near as good as it could have been. So it's time for me to slap myself and take on a totally new attitude.
OK, I know, I get like this sometimes, and normally in about a week, I'll be totally away from it and back to my old ways. But I really am going to try and make more of my life from today on. I've done it before and had great success, so it's time for me to do it again. "Hello friends! Hello birds! Hello blue warm, sunny skies! Isn't today just a wonderful day?"
thanks J! :)

What a Difference a Week Makes
Wow, it sure was a nice warm January day today. We actually headed out in our shorts and t-shirts when we visited Matthew's basketball team for their first game of the winter season. Matthew is doing well in his recovery from Chicken pox, but I thought it would be a good idea to just miss this first game. He still had fun rooting on his team from the sidelines and his teammates enjoyed having him there.
After lunch we headed out to a local park to just enjoy the warm day...
Great day to be outside at the park
Making the big throw!
No clouds or wind
Nothing beats playing on the playground
Woo-Hoo! Matthew's a swinger!
Whoa, a high flyer!
How's it going, J? (smile)
This was quite different from our cold snowy trip during the holiday week. The pictures are all uploaded in an

Back
Back at work today, none the worse for wear, just some sniffles and a little coughing. My mom is staying at my house to watch Matthew so things are looking good. Matthew's spots have almost all scabbed over already and have really shrunken down, so he's definitely on the mend. He was saying that he really wanted to go back to school already and see his friends, so I know he's doing good.
Oh, and good luck out to J who's having a long 4 hour interview today for a "second" part-time job to go with the other one she starts in a couple of weeks!

Chicken Pox and Cold-eze
Just a brief update before I go to bed tonight. Matthew's Chicken Pox is pretty low-key (I'd estimate that he only has about 30-35 spots on his body) and he's not really suffering all that much. Only a handful of the spots have been hurting or extremely itchy, so I'm glad that he's not under too much distress. The fact that he already had his Chicken Pox vaccine when he was a year old must be what has helped his outbreak not be so bad. He's also on an anti-viral medication that is supposed to shorten the length of time of the disease.
It was a big load off of my mind that I already had Chicken Pox when I was a kid, although I realize that it's not sure that I won't get it again, or even get shingles, like David Lettermen had. But I am sporting a pretty decent headcold, so I'm taking my Vitamin C, drinking lots and popping the Cold-Eze lozenges. I hope that this thing doesn't get too much worse. I've been home with Matthew the last couple of days and planning on going back to work tomorrow. *cough* Thanks for those who have sent their support and kind words!
UPDATE (01/08, 7:35 AM): Bleah. Woke up this morning feeling a lot worse from this cold, so I'm gonna stay home and get some rest. Achooooo!

The GOOD news is that my mom checked back in her records and found out that I
DID already have chicken pox when I was 6 years old, so I'm off the hook!!! Whew!.
The bad news is that I'm catching a cold. Yuck. But I'll take that any day over the possibility of the Chicken pox.
